BIG IDEAS!!
Get invloved with your progarm by getting involved with the Community whether it be the university or the city or both!
WIthout the support of your community how woudl you keep things running
How to keep everyone involved:
Have events that bring out any type of person whether they have sailed or not!
UVic hold BBQ's to get those interested out. BBQs at the opening of the Compound (our residence for the boats). Fee would pay for cost of food and drinks. Don't overcharge just charge what the amount you had to pay out. Pop and some food will never go bad so long as you keep it stored properly. Most important take them out sailing with an experienced sailor so they do not get shyed away form your program!
MOst important: Word of mouth. Keep the group engaged and keep publicity out there.
At UVic we have what are called club days...goal of this is to get the students of the school involved! We meet in the student building and set up a desk where people then sign up for te club and are then sent an email abotu our program and when the club is open to sail. After the clubs days we always follow up with the BBQ just to enable those that signed up to get out on the water and get a feel for what sailing is about.
Visuals are very important so if you can bring a boat up to the school and show it off on a Club day then you will get people interested!
Get involved with other clubs, and may connections so big trips can be manageable. Networking and connections can make a significant difference.
Keeping everyone involved!!!!!! Can't reiterate this enough!
"The community experience is all about getting everyone together, it's all about the community."
